ECOP participates in the ASEAN Regional Dialogue on Young People’s Skills, Employability and Transition to Decent Work

Last 17-18 October 2023, over 150 delegates and youth advocates from all ASEAN Member States and Timor Leste gathered in Jakarta, Indonesia for Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: ASEAN Regional Dialogue on Young People’s Skills, Employability and Transition to Decent Work. The event was led by The ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC), UNICEF, and International Labour Organization (ILO), with support from UNDP, UNESCO, and UN Women.

The dialogue addressed various challenges, developments, and changes faced by youth in areas such as employment, upskilling, and equal opportunities. The two-day event focused on four key thematic areas: inclusive, future-ready education systems; skills development and employability; youth employment and labor market transitions for a human-centered recovery; and entrepreneurship. Discussions also delved into critical areas such as gender equality, green and digital skills, and job opportunities in the Asia- Pacific region.

The event featured panel discussions with change-makers and advocates from diverse fields who served as speakers, rapporteurs, reactors, and moderators. Each session concluded with a positive note—fostering a productive intergenerational exchange of ideas, challenges, and best practices related to youth’s learning, skilling, employability, engagement, and transition to decent work across ASEAN.

At the event’s conclusion, representatives had the opportunity to review and contribute to the draft action plan. This collaborative effort resulted in a joint recommendation emphasizing the need for more fruitful partnerships among sectors, equal opportunities for all, policies and projects tailored to beneficiaries’ needs, and active youth involvement in these discussions.
