ECOP participates in a capacity building workshop on the protection of stateless persons, refugees and internally displaced persons

The United Nations on High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population Development (PLCPD) held a capacity building workshop for civil society organizations on the advocacy to protect stateless persons, refugees and internally displaced persons, titled, “Hope Away from Home: Prioritizing the Protection Needs of People Forced to Flee and Populations at Risk of Statelessness” last May 23-24, 2024 at Novotel Hotel, Quezon City.

The discussion focused on the national situation and policy recommendations for refugees, asylum seekers, stateless and at risk of statelessness, and providing durable solutions for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) through legislative intervention. It can be recalled that the House of Representatives approved its version in July 2023 while the Senate has yet to schedule a hearing. Said bills contain provisions which are anchored mainly on the guiding principles on internal displacement.

The workshop aims to identify areas for collaboration between and among civil society organizations, with technical support from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the Commission on Human Rights – Center for Crisis Conflict and Humanitarian Protection, the Department of Justice – Refugee and Stateless Protection Unit.
