ICYMI: Statement of DOLE on the recent wage increases

In a statement on Wednesday, May 15, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) highlighted the importance of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards (RTWPBs) in implementing wage hikes, scheduling a round of consultations starting this month. DOLE clarified that it has not opposed the proposed nationwide wage increase, respecting Congress’ authority to legislate.

As the body responsible for lawmaking, Congress has the sole power to enact, amend, or repeal laws, and DOLE defers to its primary authority and wisdom. The department’s role is to provide technical inputs to aid legislation, fulfilling its Constitutional duty as part of the Executive Branch. Furthermore, DOLE assured lawmakers it is ready to implement the wage increase if it becomes law, despite any challenges. The RTWPB – National Capital Region has set a round of public consultations on June 20 and will also be consulting with the labor sector on May 23 and the employers’ sector on June 4.
