In September 2018, the Employers Confederation of the Philippines partnered with the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI) to spearhead a project entitled “Strengthening Bipartite Relations at the National and Enterprise Levels”.

The initiative intends to establish a functioning and institutionalized bipartite dialogue mechanism at the national level, otherwise known as  Leaders’ Forum consisting of both the employer groups namely ECOP, PHILEXPORT, and PCCI, as well as the trade union movement including the FFW, SENTRO, and TUCP.

The project also involves strengthening relations between unions and management by organizing thematic workshops involving their representatives and implementing enterprise-based activities based on an action plan that they will jointly formulate.

FEU – Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation, an affiliated union of SENTRO, has conducted its first-ever activity under the action plan their union and management representatives have crafted. It focused on Labor-Management Committee (LMC) and Productivity. The company’s LMC has long been in existence but both its union and management recognize its bigger potential of promoting an improved relationship between them.

More than 40 representatives from the management and union attended the said workshop facilitated by Atty. Lorenzo Ziga, Professor, UP – School of Labor and Industrial Relations (UP – SOLAIR).

Through the workshop, the participants were provided with an in-depth review of what the LMC is, how it differs from the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), and how to sustain their existing LMC structure. The management and union members shared their experiences and thoughts as to how they can both contribute to the sustenance of their LMC while increasing their productivity at the same time.

At the end of the discussions, the participants described the workshop as a form of “bond” between the labor and management representatives. They deemed the openness from both sides critical to maintaining a harmonious and mutually-relationship between the two parties.

The next activity of FEU-NRMF will be a workshop on “Effective communication skills” which will also be participated in by its management and union representatives”.

ECOP and its partner organizations are looking forward to the enterprise-based activities that will be conducted by the other participating companies.
